Computer is not all about keyboard and the monitor alone; there are other parts which make up the computer. The external parts, that you see, that are monitor, keyboard, mouse are the hardware components of a computer whereas the programs running it are the software of the computer.

System Unit – This is the black box that you find beneath your desk. You will find the motherboard, CPU, memory storage. CPU or the central processing unit or the microprocessor is considered the brain of your computer. It processes everything from a simple to a complex process. RAM/ROM (Random Access Memory/Read Only Memory) stores all the data. Once your computer is turned off, the data stored in RAM is erased while the data stored in ROM is still there. Motherboard is the backbone of the computer.

Hard drives – These are drives which stores memory inbuilt into the computer. Ensure that you take a backup of all the data from time to time and store it in the external hard disk for future reference. In case of a system crash or due to a virus, all valuable information will not be lost.

CD and DVD drive – Due to advance in technology, we have CD and DVD drives for all personal computers. CD and DVD have a longer shelf life and you can store information on them for a longer time. Through CD and DVD you can watch movies, store volumes of music, pictures etc. Mouse – A device that is connected to your computer that points and selects from the screen. Keyboard – It is just like a typewriter which has keys used for typing texts into your computer. Keyboard has function keys, navigation keys and numerical keys.

Monitor – That part of the computer that gives the output in form of visuals. This is the screen where you see what the computer is processing.

If you thought Microsoft is the only operating systems, think again because there are hundreds of other operating systems making their rounds in the market today. Operating systems are the most important programs that every computer needs to perform other functions, for e.g. stores the files and directories, saving the file, recognizing the input via the keyboard, sending the output via the monitor etc. It is basically an interface between the user and the hardware. Let’s look at the different types of operating systems available today.

Microsoft Windows – It is the best distributed operating systems that are commonly used today. They were the first to launch their operating system. Windows is known for its various functional features and with every release, the upgraded features just keeps getting better. The most recent version of operating system is the Windows 7, for cell phones, it is Windows Phone 7 and the server version is Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Vista is another operating system by itself.
Mac Operating System – You can this on any Apple computers, the software is less expensive and very secure. It is also known for its speed quality. Its version OS X is more stable than Windows because it uses Unix technology and you can get glimpses of Apple’s innovative works.

Linux Operating System – Unix like operating system which is not a proprietary operating system. Linux has a standard core, also called kernel. Many varieties of kernel have been developed by many companies. Linux is normally used by makers of inexpensive netbooks and laptops for pre-installation.   RedHat/Fedora, Novell/SUSE or CentOS are mainly used for business purposes and most people use Ubuntu, Mandriva, or Linspire.

Chrome Operating System – Another alternative to Windows operating system which is used in netbooks. Makers of netbooks can use Chrome to install in notebooks and as of now it is free of cost.

Access to inappropriate websites – Due to internet, there is also the fear of children getting addicted to pornography and other illegal websites. Cyber bullying is also anther worrying factor caused by the Internet. Such sites have detrimental impact on the child mentally and can traumatize the child.

Spamming – Another annoying factor is the amount of spam mails which infiltrate our inbox unnecessarily. Cleaning such e-mails not only is wastage of effort and precious time but they flood the server and obstruct the normal functioning of the system.

Addiction – Another fear of the internet is addiction. Excessive use of the internet can lead to addiction. This is not limited to adults but children also. Children get hooked onto it because of the numerous online games found across various websites. Most children prefer playing these games or watching animated movies for endless hours. This not only hampers their studies, physical activity but also stops their mental stimulation.  Even adults are not spared.

Accuracy of Information – Often we get e-mails offering products at amazing rates or holidays with packages or jobs with the best pay package.
